Death benefits are usually limited to $500,000 with a few companies offering up to $1,000,000. Matt, may I ask you a question? I have a 25-year old $100K whole life policy with a surrender value of $43K, of which $21K is taxable. I’m 43 years old. Dividends now more than cover the $900/yr premium. Does it make sense to hold on to this? I am torn! I could surrender it and pay off a second mortgage which is at 7.6%… Thank you in advance. Love your site!
How much of the family income do I provide? The first important consideration is cost; whole life can be up to six to 10 times as expensive as a comparable term life policy, so be sure it fits into your budget.

One of the most popular types of term life insurance, level term life insurance (or term level life insurance) available through AIG Direct, offers life insurance on level terms or a fixed premium payment for the duration of the term. It also has a fixed benefit amount and the terms range from 10 to 30 years. A longer term could mean a higher monthly premium, because the carrier typically averages the cost of insuring someone who is younger with the cost of insuring someone who is older (when premiums are more expensive). Because level term life insurance has a “set it and forget it” fixed payment, it can be easier for people to budget. Having a fixed benefit that pays the face amount also holds appeal as straightforward, “pure” insurance.

Type B Death Benefit: The other option is a combination of a specific death benefit plus the cash value accumulation feature which builds over the life of the policy.

Over time, the death benefit shrinks and the cash value component grows until the policy consists entirely of the cash value. You can do many things with the cash value, including taking out a loan, drawing from it for retirement or funding the policy.
In addition to the death benefit, universal life insurance also contains a cash value. The cash value grows tax-deferred until funds are withdrawn.

Indexed Universal Life Insurance Policies Mute Amica Life Insurance After you decide which type of insurance policy you’re going to buy, you have to decide how large of a policy you’re going to need, and look at your financial situation to determine that. The first thing, as we mentioned early, is how much debt would you leave for your family? Make sure that your policy is at least big enough that your family would be able to pay off any final expenses. Sit down and calculate all of your debt and debt that you may have in the future, this number is a great starting point for your policy.
C Young Retirement income calculator Life insurance salesmen like to talk about the returns on their policies as if they are guaranteed. They are not. Neither are the returns from stocks or bonds, but don’t be misled into thinking that whole life insurance returns are somehow on a different level. The illustrations they present showing beautiful long-term growth are simply projections, and rosy ones at that since the company is trying to sell you. There is plenty of risk that the actual performance will be worse than what is shown during the sales process.

You then get a 30 year mortgage term life insurance policy.  The way this would work is that every year you would be paying down your house so the idea is that the policy will only cover the amount of the house that you would still owe.
You may ask, what other options are there for you if you do not want: guaranteed cash value in the whole life policy, or cannot afford the whole life premiums and dislike term insurance because of the lack of long term guaranteed level premiums. A possible solution is Guaranteed Universal Life insurance.

I did an in-depth analysis awhile back showing the exact opposite of what you presented here. If you adjust for risk tolerance, and look at the best policies on the market, they’re not only competitive, they’re good. And, what I found corresponds with the research currently available about whole life vs BTID. Namely, sometimes, they’re better than a traditional 60/40 split portfolio (though I’d be hesitant to make that comparison as a blanket rule).
Life insurance support You can secure a term policy or a guaranteed universal life insurance policy that does not accumulate a cash value and save the money you have built up over the years before it’s completely gone. Guaranteed universal life policies, (also known as GUL), are permanent insurance policies with level rates and coverage until age 90, 95, 100, 105, 110, or 120. These policies are usually a fraction of the cost of a universal life insurance policy because there is no investment component. Guaranteed universal life insurance policies work just like a term policy except the coverage is set to a specific age, usually 90 or later, instead of a 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 year period.

Each type of life insurance product has its advantages and disadvantages. You can’t say term life is the best, whole life is the best or universal life is the best. It depends on what an individual client need and his or her situation. As a client, they should know all the advantages and disadvantages but of course, they are under the supervision of a certain type of insurance agent that can be biased and try to sell what they have to offer to form their companies. Avoid an agent that focuses on selling one type of product. Talk to an agent who can provide the knowledge of each type and you can choose what best for you.

Internationally known financial adviser Suze Orman strongly believes that if you want insurance, buy term; if you want an investment, buy an investment, not insurance. Don’t mix the two. Unless you’re a very savvy investor and understand all the implications of the various types of life insurance policies, you most likely should purchase term life insurance.

Whole life insurance, like term insurance, will pay your beneficiaries a specific amount of money upon your death. The primary difference between term and whole life is that term insurance provides coverage for a set period (10 or 20 years, for instance), while whole life insurance pays its benefit as long as premiums have been paid.

  3. Once you write the check, it’s insurance company money. After some time, you may have the right,to borrow some money from them. They decide how much insurance they will pay and how much you can borrow. Let’s take a look at what they have named a universal policy. Let’s say you want to get the savings started right out the door. So you write them a check for $5000. Next month you have an emergency an ,you kneed $25.0/0. Too bad! In a few years, you’ll have a few dollars in cash value. First year or two – none! Now let’s say they have have a guaranteed return of 4%. N ow if you actually have a “cash value” of some kind, don’t you think there would be something there? 4% of WHAT = $0 ??? It’s all insurance company money – they said so to the US government in 1985.

In the first year that you pay premiums, much of that premium is used to pay the agent’s commission. In the following years a good chunk of your premium is applied towards covering the death benefits portion and administrative fees.
